Not a single pupil in the final examination classes at VMBO Maastricht passed their exams successfully, according to a message the school sent to its 354 final exam pupils. "Before you can get your diploma, you must have completed the school exam with complete success. None of you have done that yet", the message reads, the Teleraaf reports.
The re-exams of seven pupils of the Rijswijks Lyceum were declared invalid because their teachers gave them the opportunity to improve their answers after the re-exams were written. The four teachers will be dismissed and a declaration will be filed against them, the board of the Rijswijk school, Stichting VO Haaglanden, announced, RTL Nieuws reports.
The Alfa college in Hoogeveen will be running school-shooting drills next week, the school informed pupils and parents in a letter. The school wants to train pupils how to react if they are ever faced with such violence. General education union AOb is baffled by the exercise, but the police applaud it, AD reports.
Association Beter Onderwijs Nederland (BON) is filing a lawsuit against the University of Twente, Maastricht University, and the Inspectorate for Education in an effort to halt higher education in the Netherlands turning increasingly English, ANP reports.
According to BON, "the care of Dutch language and culture is a core task for higher education". The association believes that switching to teaching in English is contrary to the law. "Dutch threatens to become a kind of provincial language", BON chairman Ad Verbrugge said.
Kids in Dutch primary- and secondary schools are achieving poorer and poorer results. The average results on subjects like reading, mathematics, science and physical education gradually declined over the past 20 years, the Education Inspectorate concluded in its annual report, the Volkskrant reports.
"On average the Netherlands is doing well", Inspector General Monique Vogelzang said to the newspaper. "But if you look at the long term, you see that we are slowing drifting downward. I'm worried about that."
The Education Inspectorate is not investigating the Avatar ideology in Dutch schools, because it has not yet received any reports regarding the ideology. Only if reports are received will the Inspectorate investigate whether Avatar poses a threat to the three main elements Dutch schools must guarantee, the Telegraaf reports.
The three elements all Dutch schools must guarantee are quality of education, good citizenship including respect for those who think differently, and safety. Schools are allowed to teach from an ideology, as long as it does not threaten those elements.
In 2012 the Jewish Cheider School in Amsterdam waited three months to report that teacher Ephraim S. is suspected of sexually assaulting students, and only did so under pressure from then Minister Marja van Bijsterveldt of Education, the Telegraaf reports based on internal documents from the school and conversations with former teachers.
A man teaching Dutch at the ROC Midden-Nederland disappeared without a trace, taking with him the oral exams and results of 80 students training to be chefs in the school's Facility, Hospitality and Travel College. These students will now have to retake the exam, a spokesperson for the school confirmed to NU.nl.
Studying in Amsterdam seems to be becoming increasingly only for the "white elite", according to student union ASVA and Amsterdam United. Especially young people with financially less well-off parents and young people with a non-Western background have a hard time getting into higher education in the Dutch capital, Metro Nieuws reports.
"Education is increasingly only for the white elite. Action must be taken now", Henriette Hoogervorst, chairman of ASVA, said to the newspaper.
About a third of kids in group 8 score higher in their final test than the level at which their school estimated them, according to a report by the Education Inspectorate. For 13 thousand kids, about one in five students, this led to a an adjusted high school advice last year. The number of reports of physical violence in Dutch schools increased from 426 to 569 in the 2015/16 school year, according to a report from the Education Inspectorate. The complaints about discrimination on the grounds of race or religion decreased by around 40 percent to 28 complaints. The total number of reports decreased slightly, from 2,000 to 1,962, the Telegraaf reports.

About 50 vocational school pupils at Wartburg College in Rotterdam have to rewrite their Dutch exam due to an error on the school's side. The students wrote the exam in Microsoft Word, which has a spell check on it. The education inspectorate therefore declared the exams invalid, the Telegraaf reports.
Reports of sexual abuse in schools are increasing, the Education Inspectorate announced on Wednesday. A total of 112 reports were received in the 2014/2015 school year, compared to 86 reports in the previous year. Dutch parliamentarians are shocked by these figures.
