Three held in theft of €5 million of smartphones taken from Schiphol Airport area

Authorities in the Netherlands have apprehended three suspects in connection with the theft of a shipment of mobile devices valued in the millions. The incident took place in the vicinity of Schiphol Airport just over a month ago, and the arrests took place in the weeks that followed.

"The stolen cargo consists of smartphones with a street value of approximately 5 million euros," the Marechaussee said. "The investigation is focusing on an organized crime group. Among the arrested suspects is an employee of a transport company at Schiphol, who may have passed on information to the criminal organization."

The case dates back to June 18, and was investigated by the Marechaussee. Authorities have since taken three men into custody, including two 24-year-olds from Amsterdam, and a 39-year-old from Zoetermeer, Zuid-Holland.

The Marechaussee did not specify when the arrests took place, nor if any of the cargo was recovered. The branch of the military is tasked with securing Dutch ports and borders, including Schiphol Airport.

"The investigation is being led by the Public Prosecution Service of Noord-Holland and is still in progress," the Marechaussee stated. More arrests are possible as the case develops.
