Entire Huizen housing block to be demolished after fatal explosion
An entire residential block in Huizen must be demolished after a powerful explosion and fire killed one resident and injured two others last week. A safety inspection found the damaged building was no longer fit for habitation, NH reports. It is not yet known when the demolition will take place.
Housing corporation De Alliantie confirmed to NH that the damage is too severe for the building to remain standing, as it is considered at risk of collapse. An investigation by Huizen municipal building and housing inspectors and a contractor working for De Alliantie found that the entire block was unsafe.
The blast destroyed parts of the front and rear of the home where it occurred. The fire also created a large hole in the roof. All of that left the building with parts of the exterior wall and roof destroyed and the interior rooms exposed.
The block contains eight homes with seven residents. A De Alliantie spokesperson said the residents are currently staying with family and friends or in hotels.
“We are now working hard to make available vacant homes for them,” the spokesperson said.
