Professional fireworks in storage unit prompt evacuation of Eindhoven apartment complex
A large quantity of professional fireworks was found in a basement storage unit of an apartment building in Eindhoven on Tuesday evening. The police evacuated a large part of the building and cordoned off several streets as a precaution. Officers arrested two people, including the 29-year-old man who owns the storage unit, the Oost-Brabant police said on X.
The police checked the basement storage unit in the building on Brahmslaan after a tip about possibly illegal fireworks. At the scene, officers encountered a large amount and called in explosive experts to examine the find.
“They have determined that it involves fireworks intended exclusively for professional use,” the police said. “If these fireworks had detonated prematurely, the damage would have been incalculable.”
The police brought in a specialized company to remove and destroy the fireworks.
The 29-year-old man who owns the storage unit also lives in the building. The police also checked his apartment and arrested a woman they found there. The woman had an outstanding sentence, and her arrest was unrelated to the fireworks discovery, a police spokesperson told Omroep Brabant.
The police lifted the cordon and allowed evacuated residents to return to their homes after the explosives had been removed from the scene. That happened at around 10:30 p.m.
