Heavily armed police rescue man, 33, from hostage situation in Tiel home; Five arrested
The police’s Special Intervention Service (DSI) ended a hostage situation in a home in Tiel on Sunday afternoon, rescuing a 33-year-old man from Meteren. Five suspects were arrested, the police said on Monday, Omroep Gelderland reports.
The DSI raided a home on Hertog Arnoldstraat at around 5:30 p.m. on Sunday after receiving a report about a hostage situation in the home. Officers found a 33-year-old man inside being held against his will.
The police freed the hostage and arrested four suspects at the scene.
A short time later, the DSI raided another home on Diderik Vijghstraat, a short distance away. The fifth suspect was arrested at this address.
All five men are suspected of hostage taking, unlawfully depriving someone of their liberty, and are in custody for questioning. They are a 41-year-old with no fixed address, a 43-year-old from Beekbergen, a 25-year-old from Ochten, and two men from Tiel, aged 31 and 41.
The police are investigating the motive for the hostage situation, what happened inside the home, and what roles the suspects played. Investigators asked witnesses or anyone with relevant information to come forward.
