Suspected drunk driver arrested after injuring two police officers at Tiel crash scene
Two police officers were injured in Tiel, Gelderland, in the early hours of Sunday after a car struck them while they were handling the aftermath of a separate traffic accident involving two vehicles, De Gelderlander reported. A 35-year-old man from Maurik was arrested for dangerous driving and possibly driving under the influence.
The incident occurred around midnight at the intersection of Nieuwe Tielseweg and Sterrebos. According to a police spokesperson, the officers were standing on the sidewalk when a car, for reasons still unknown, drove toward them. The officers attempted to move out of the way but were unable to fully avoid being struck.
One officer received treatment at the scene from ambulance personnel. The other was taken to a hospital for further examination but was not admitted. Neither officer required hospitalization.
The driver, a 35-year-old man from Maurik, was immediately arrested and is being held for questioning. Police said he is suspected of driving under the influence and dangerous driving. Investigators are still working to determine exactly what happened and said no scenarios are being ruled out, including possible intent.
The road remained closed for several hours while forensic teams conducted an investigation. Authorities reopened the area around 10 a.m. Police are asking witnesses to come forward and for any dashcam and doorbell camera footage.
