Utrecht student dies two days after participating in marathon
A runner who collapsed during the Utrecht Marathon on Sunday died in the hospital two days later. The young man was a student at Utrecht University. The university confirmed the news to NU.nl, stressing that his family does not wish to share further information.
The young man collapsed during the marathon at around 12:30 p.m. on Sunday. Emergency services, including a trauma team by helicopter, were quickly on the scene. First responders resuscitated the man and rushed him to a hospital, where he died on Tuesday.
The marathon was briefly halted and then diverted around the emergency services.
The young man was a member of the Utrecht student association Veritas. The association said the news of his death was met “with great dismay.” Veritas has declared a five-day mourning period.
