Transavia scrapping flights over May holiday season due to high kerosine prices
Transavia is cancelling multiple flights in May and June due to the high kerosene prices. The cancellations affect about 2 percent of the airline’s flights during the busy May holiday season, RTL Nieuws reported.
Affected customers can choose between a free rebooking, a voucher, or a full refund of their ticket, a spokesperson for the KLM subsidiary said.
The Consumentenbond previously advised travelers to opt for rebooking their flight, instead of requesting a refund. Because the new ticket you buy will definitely be more expensive.
Like other airlines, Transavia has already raised its ticket prices due to the high kerosene costs, averaging at around €10 extra per return flight.
Parent company KLM already announced it was canceling 160 flights in the coming months, saying that these flights cannot be operated profitably due to the rising fuel prices.
Fuel prices, including for kerosene, are rising due to the war in the Middle East. Transport through the Strait of Hormuz, an important shipping route for oil and natural gas, has been limited since the United States and Israel started attacking Iran late in February. This has caused oil prices to skyrocket, making all kinds of fuel more expensive.
