“A new step for Hungary,” Dutch PM Jetten says about Peter Magyar’s election win
Peter Magyar’s election victory “marks a new step for Hungary and the EU,” Prime Minister Rob Jetten said on X. He congratulated the opposition leader, who, according to initial counts, defeated Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán in the recent elections.
“The Hungarian people have spoken,” Jetten said, speaking of a “historic election victory” for Magyar and Hungary. His win sparks “hope for the restoration of democracy, the rule of law, and European cooperation.”
Deputy Prime Minister Dilan Yeşilgöz also responded on X. “The outcome of the elections in Hungary ushers in a new chapter, for the country itself and for Europe as a whole. With great hope for renewed opportunities for a stable democracy and a strong rule of law. Congratulations to Peter Magyar,” she wrote.
“The voice of Hungary is loud and clear,” Minister Tom Berendsen of Foreign Affairs wrote on X. “I look forward to working with the new government and hope for a positive path within the EU, alongside clear expectations regarding reforms.”
Various Dutch parliamentarians also celebrated Magyar’s victory with posts on social media. “The Hungarians have spoken loud and clear!” wrote Ruben Brekelmans (VVD). “Let us now hope for a Hungary that cooperates in Europe and respects the rule of law. That no longer blocks support for Ukraine. And that no longer acts as a Trojan horse for Russia. Congratulations to Peter Magyar.”
“The Hungarian population has made it clear today: the Orban regime must stop. This election result is enormously hopeful. For Hungary, for democracy, for Europe,” wrote CDA leader Henri Bontenbal, also congratulating Magyar. “I look forward to meeting him in Europe at one of the European People's Party gatherings and working together for a stronger Europe.”
“Congratulations to all people in Hungary, Ukraine, and the rest of Europe,” wrote MP Tom van der Lee of PRO, formerly GL-PvdA. “The election victory of Péter Magyar offers perspective on a more united Europe and stronger support for the courageous struggle of the Ukrainians!”
