PSV clinches historic Eredivisie title as Feyenoord draw at Volendam

PSV were crowned champions of the Eredivisie on Sunday after Feyenoord failed to beat FC Volendam. Feyenoord drew 0-0 away at Volendam, meaning that they cannot catch Peter Bosz’s side, who have now won 27 Eredivisie titles.

No team in Eredivisie history had ever been crowned champions by April 5. The previous earliest title win belonged to PSV, who clinched the championship on April 8, 1978. It is Bosz’s third league title in a row.

PSV did not lead the standings from the outset of the campaign. In late August, they were unexpectedly beaten 0–2 at home by newly promoted Telstar, and in September, they were also held to a 2–2 draw against Ajax in their own stadium. Feyenoord began the season more convincingly and remained top of the table through October.

PSV inflicted Feyenoord’s first loss of the season on October 26, winning 2–3 at De Kuip. That result left the two teams tied on points, with Feyenoord still leading due to a better goal difference.

PSV followed up with an impressive winning streak, stringing together victory after victory, while Feyenoord’s early momentum faded. By mid-March, the gap between them had widened to 19 points. Still, the past few weeks added a slight blemish, with losses to NEC (2–3) and Telstar (3–1).

NEC defeated PSV both in the league and in the KNVB Cup semi-finals. Meanwhile, PSV’s Champions League campaign ended in the main phase, a step back from last season, when they made it to the round of 16.

Feyenoord started their 29th match of the campaign without winger Anis Hadj Moussa and struggled in a dull first half, failing to find the net. The hosts, however, did little to capitalize before halftime.

After the break, Feyenoord stepped up their efforts to score, creating plenty of opportunities but lacking the finishing touch. With 15 minutes to go, Jivayno Zinhagel came on for his first appearance in the senior team, becoming one of the youngest players in the club’s history at just sixteen years and 352 days old.

PSV has reduced the difference with Ajax in the number of Eredivisie championships to nine. Ajax remains the Dutch leader with 36 titles, and Feyenoord ranks third with 16.
