Third dead mouse found in Jumbo frozen green beans

A third dead mouse has been found in frozen green beans from the supermarket chain Jumbo within a short period of time, a spokesperson has confirmed after reporting from NU.nl. The company has apologized to the customer and is retrieving the product to examine the situation further.

The exact time and location of the purchase remain unclear. Earlier, a Rotterdam couple reported finding a mouse in a package of private-label frozen green beans bought in Capelle aan den IJssel. When the case came to light on Tuesday, another report surfaced, as a man from Swalmen told NU.nl he had experienced the same issue.

When the first report was made, the couple discovered the mouse resting atop the beans as they opened the bag. Shocked, they tossed it onto their garden path and said it made them feel “really sick.”

On March 7, a 65-year-old resident of Swalmen found the mouse while cooking an Indonesian dish. After pouring the contents of the bag into boiling water, he noticed the body drifting between the beans, later remarking that it was “quite a large one.”

The discovery of the third mouse was reported straight to Jumbo by the customer involved. The retailer has said it will retrieve the product in person and examine it together with the supplier.

After the initial two incidents, Jumbo withdrew all of its private-label frozen green beans, both whole and cut, from its stores. The company said the step was purely precautionary and that there was no threat to consumer health.

All 400-gram and 800-gram packs of whole and cut green beans under the Jumbo private label are included in the recall. Customers may bring back any purchased bags of green beans to any Jumbo location and will be refunded in full, even without a receipt.

The supplier suggested that the mouse may have gotten into the green beans during automated harvesting or processing. Jumbo said the supplier has started extra inspections in the packaging process to ensure the problem does not happen again.
