House fire in De Pijp, Amsterdam, injures one, leaves building partially uninhabitable
A fire in an apartment in the Toldwarsstraat neighborhood of De Pijp injured a resident and left the building partially uninhabitable early Friday morning. According to AT5, authorities have not yet determined the cause of the fire.
The fire broke out shortly after midnight in an apartment on the second or third floor of the building, according to multiple reports. Firefighters quickly responded, escalating the situation to a “large fire” due to the intensity of the blaze. The rear of the apartment was heavily affected, and flames spread outside the building. Several firefighting units worked to control the fire, which was largely contained within about 30 minutes.
The resident of the apartment inhaled smoke and was transported to a hospital. Officials have not released information on their current condition.
Nearby residents were forced to evacuate during the night. A fire department spokesperson reported Friday morning that the apartment where the fire occurred is uninhabitable. Units above and below the affected apartment remain temporarily inaccessible due to smoke and water damage. “But we expect the occupants of those two units can return soon,” the spokesperson said.
