Video: 81-year-old driver killed in wrong-way crash on A59; Two injured
An 81-year-old woman from Oosterhout was killed in a two-car crash on the A59 near Waalwijk early Saturday, police said. Authorities reported that the woman was driving in the wrong direction at the time of the collision.
The accident left two people from the other vehicle injured: a 23-year-old man and a 24-year-old woman from Arnhem, NOS reported. The crash occurred shortly after midnight, heading toward the Hooipolder interchange.
Emergency responders were called after reports of a wrong-way driver on the highway and found severe wreckage at the scene, including a detached engine block lying on the road.
The male passenger in the other car had to be extricated by firefighters before he and the woman were transported to a hospital.
The A59 was closed between the Heusden exit and Waalwijk for hours during the police investigation but has since reopened, according to the ANWB traffic service.
