Feyenoord edge past FC Utrecht to reclaim second place in Eredivisie
Feyenoord claimed a narrow 0–1 victory away to FC Utrecht on Sunday, a result that lifts Robin van Persie’s side back to second place in the Eredivisie. They now sit 1 point ahead of NEC, who still have a game in hand.
The win helped Feyenoord calm growing unrest among their unhappy fan base. FC Utrecht currently sit 13th in the standings, holding a 7-point cushion over Heracles Almelo in 16th place.
Feyenoord and Utrecht both badly needed a morale-boosting result. Utrecht’s only victory since November 9 had come against TOP Oss in the KNVB Cup, while Feyenoord’s early-season momentum had faded enough to put second place at risk. Discontent among the club’s supporters has grown, with criticism increasingly directed at the board. For safety reasons, director Dennis te Kloese stayed away from the match, as travelling fans unfurled banners demanding the exit of Van Persie and the supervisory board.
With Ayase Ueda sidelined through injury, Van Persie opted against deploying a conventional striker. Instead, Hadj Moussa and Sliti provided width, while Valente and Moder frequently joined the attack through the middle. Utrecht may rue the missed opportunity by Feyenoord loanee Gjivai Zechiël in the eighth minute, as just two minutes afterward Targhalline put the visitors ahead, completing a slick combination with Moder for the decisive 0–1.
After taking the lead, Feyenoord kept a firm grip on the game, showing a tighter defensive shape than they had before the winter break. Utrecht struggled to create danger, missing the kind of inventive players needed to trouble Feyenoord at the back. Former key men Miguel Rodríguez and Yoann Cathline are no longer first choices, having been replaced by January arrivals Ángel Alarcón and Jesper Karlsson.
Looking to alter the momentum, Ron Jans made changes at halftime, introducing Cathline and recent signing Artem Stepanov for Alarcón and Bozdogan. Utrecht began playing more opportunistically and Zechiël once again squandered a gilt-edged chance. Feyenoord survived another scare when Miguel Rodríguez, who had come on as a substitute, could not get past Wellenreuther. Rodríguez’s evening ended in the 78th minute, when he received a second booking for attempting to deceive the referee into awarding a penalty.
