Wild police chase from Utrecht ends in crash across Belgian border

A wild police chase that started in Utrecht ended across the Belgian border, when the car being chased crashed into a guardrail in Meer on Thursday night. The driver was injured.

The chase started in Utrecht and went through Breda toward Belgium. It is unclear why the motorist fled from the police. According to Hart van Nederland, the driver hit multiple other vehicles in Utrecht, and the police deployed two helicopters during the chase.

The police tried to stop the vehicle multiple times, but the chase only came to an end when the driver crashed into the guardrail on John Lijsenstraat in Meer, Belgium, Omroep Brabant reported. The Dutch and Belgian police and an ambulance responded to the scene.

The distance between Utrecht and Meer is roughly 90 kilometers. Reportedly, the top speed reached during the chase was around 200 kilometers per hour. There is some uncertainty about where the chase started. ZHZ Actueel wrote that it started in Amstelveen, and there were mentions of police cars with flashing lights on the A16 near Rotterdam.

The driver was injured, but it is unclear whether they had to be taken to the hospital. It is also unclear whether they had been arrested, and if so, by whom.
