PSV knocked out of the UEFA Champions League after late defeat to Bayern Munich

PSV were knocked out of the UEFA Champions League on Wednesday after a late Harry Kane goal resulted in them losing 2-1 against Bayern Munich at the Philips Stadium. Ismael Saibari had equalized a few minutes earlier, which would have been enough to advance to the playoff round after Jamal Musiala had put the German side ahead.

Prior to the game, PSV were boosted by the news that Guus Til passed a later fitness test to start the game. This was not the case for Annas Salah-Eddine, who picked up an injury a week ago and was still not fit enough to play.

PSV knew before the game that they would need at least a draw against a Bayern side that was already guaranteed to finish in the top eight of the competition. They start the game in this fashion, with Ismael Saibari and Ivan Perisic having two shots at goal in the early stages.

Jonas Urbig, who is usually Bayern’s second-choice keeper behind Manuel Neuer, was given the chance in a slightly rotated Bayern side. The 22-year-old was forced into a spectacular-looking save in the 17th minute when Joey Veerman’s shot was going towards the goal off of Jonathan Tah.

Urbig had to pull out another terrific save when Veerman’s corner was headed on towards the far corner by Perisic in the 44th minute. The Croat came close in the 45th minute, but his effort went inches wide.

Bayern took the lead in the 58th minute. Lennart Karl and Jamal Musiala played a skillful one-two which culminated in Musiala hitting the ball high into the goal via the inside of the post.

Karl almost added a goal a few minutes later. The Young German winger curled an effort towards the far corner, but PSV goalkeeper Matej Kovar punched it away.

A bolt out of the blue resulted in a leveler for PSV in the 78th minute. Ismael Saibari played a one-two with Guus Til before taking a touch and hitting a tremendous shot into the far corner to send the crowd inside the Philips stadium into wild celebrations.

But this joy did not last long. Bayern manager Vincent Company had brought on some of his best players midway through the second half, and it showed when the team’s star striker, Harry Kane, placed the ball high into the goal after receiving a pass from Luis Diaz.

Kane should have doubled his tally in the 87th minute when a long kick from Urbig, which was also the starting point for Bayern’s first goal, sent the Englishman away into a one-on-one situation with Kovar, but the Czech keeper blocked the attempt.

PSV were unable to create anything to trouble the Bayern defence late on, and they also ended the game with 10 men when Mauro Junior was sent off for a second bookable offense after fouling Michael Elise.

Bosz’s side will now focus on the Eredivisie, which is likely already won, having built a gap of 14 points over nearest challengers Feyenoord.
