"Positive" that Trump decided to withdraw Greenland tarrif, Dutch PM Schoof says

Caretaker Prime Minister Dick Schoof considers it a positive development that U.S. president Donald Trump has withdrawn the announced tariffs on European countries. “It is positive that we are now on the path to de-escalation and that the 10 percent import tariffs are off the table,” he wrote on X.

Caretaker Foreign Affairs Minister David Van Weel (VVD) also called it good news on X. “It’s now important for NATO allies to continue working together to strengthen the security of the Arctic region,” he wrote.

Earlier Wednesday evening, after meeting with NATO chief Mark Rutte, Trump said he would refrain from imposing the tariffs he threatened, as there was a framework for a future deal on Greenland. The details of this deal remain unclear.

Trump had announced an additional 10 percent import tariff on all countries that participated in the short-term reconnaissance mission to Greenland, to be imposed on February 1. Two Dutch officers were in Greenland from Friday to Monday.

Trump claims that he needs Greenland for U.S. National Security. He wants to annex Greenland, even though it is part of NATO ally Denmark.
