Vigil grows for Schiedam man killed in snowball brawl; Teenagers remain in custody
A vigil is growing for a 60-year-old man killed Monday near Nieuwland metro station in Schiedam after a confrontation with teenagers over snowball throwing, authorities said. The man reportedly confronted the youths, which may have led to an assault.
He was resuscitated on Van Limburg Stirumstraat around 12:00 p.m., but efforts were unsuccessful. Since his death, residents have gathered on the bicycle bridge near the metro station, leaving flowers, candles, and heartfelt messages.
One note, believed to be from his daughter, read, “As special as the snow fell, so special you left, Dad. I am proud of you, Dad. I love you so much! Love, your (big) little girl,” according to Rijnmond. Another message read, “Thank you for your help and the laughter. You were always there for us. Thank you, Berry.”
Neighbors visiting the vigil expressed concern about the incident and the wider social implications. One resident said Thursday, “It seems to have started from a quarrel because he corrected some youths throwing snowballs. People are afraid to correct others nowadays, and that’s why these things happen. Correcting youth is important. Some parents may be frustrated, but it’s necessary. In the past, it happened much more often.”
Police have detained two Schiedam teenagers, ages 16 and 17, in connection with the snowball brawl. Authorities said Thursday that the boys would remain in custody while further questioning continues to determine their exact roles. Despite describing the snowball dispute as "the main scenario currently being considered," police said the investigation is ongoing.
