Nxt Museum in Amsterdam-Noord reopens Saturday after securing major subsidy
Nxt Museum in Amsterdam-Noord, which filed for bankruptcy last month due to mounting debts from the COVID-19 pandemic, announced it will reopen on Saturday following a successful financial rescue.
Director Merel van Helsdingen said the museum’s survival was secured through a substantial subsidy from the Cultuurloket DigitALL, a fund supported by government agencies and commercial partners. “I received a wonderful email from Tanja Zuijderwijk, who runs Cultuurloket DigitALL. She said she was shocked by the news of the bankruptcy and wanted to help. It brought tears to my eyes,” Van Helsdingen told Het Parool.
Cathelijne Broers, director of the Cultuurfonds, emphasized Nxt Museum’s distinct role in the Dutch cultural sector. “We believe in strengthening the cultural sector by connecting technology with audiences. Nxt Museum occupies a unique position in this landscape,” Broers said. Van Helsdingen declined to disclose the exact amount of the subsidy, citing confidentiality.
The museum’s financial restructuring includes a shift in its organizational setup. The museum has established a new private company, with the affiliated Nxt Foundation taking a leading role.
The foundation will manage museum activities, including exhibitions, collaborations, and ticket sales, replacing the private company that previously handled only select projects and events. The exhibition Still Processing, which explores technology and human perception, will feature at its reopening.
