Drivers expected to face hazardous winter roads across Netherland on Monday

Drivers in the Netherlands are expected to face hazardous conditions Monday morning as winter weather continues and the post-holiday commute begins. Snow and ice forming on wet roads are creating slippery surfaces, officials warned. Motorists are advised to drive cautiously and expect slower travel as winter weather.

Rijkswaterstaat has deployed more than 1,200 gritters and snowplows, with 1,500 staff working to keep highways clear. Authorities urged motorists to give snow-clearing vehicles room and to avoid unnecessary lane changes.

Severe winter conditions are expected to persist over the coming days. The Royal Netherlands Meteorological Institute (KNMI) has issued a yellow weather warning in effect until early Tuesday afternoon.

Rijkswaterstaat also maintains specialized emergency vehicles, including Lavastorm and Firestorm, to respond to ice formation on roads. Firestorm was used Sunday on the A1 near Deventer to address icy conditions.
