Schiphol cancels dozens more flights as heavy snowfall continues
Heavy snowfall continues to cause widespread flight disruptions at Schiphol Airport on Saturday, forcing the cancellation of more than 60 flights, including 48 after 15 p.m. Earlier in the day, at least 15 flights had already been canceled, according to airport sources.
The airport reported that snow and freezing conditions combined with operational difficulties disrupted normal flight schedules. Airlines advised passengers to check their flight status before traveling, as delays and additional cancellations were expected throughout the afternoon.
The KNMI weather institute lifted a code orange warning for extreme winter conditions at 2:03 p.m. Saturday. Slippery roads caused by snow and the freezing of wet surfaces remain a concern, prompting a code yellow warning across many parts of the Netherlands.
Airport officials cited both weather-related hazards and technical failures affecting ground operations as the cause of the disruptions. The winter conditions, including snow accumulation and icy surfaces, hindered aircraft movements on taxiways and runways, while some logistical systems experienced malfunctions.
Passengers reportedly faced long wait times at check-in counters and boarding gates, with some flights delayed by several hours. Airlines work to reroute travelers or offer rebooking options.
