Fire Service chair warns public: Respect first responders during last year of fireworks
With just four days until New Year’s Eve, Dutch Fire Service chair Jolanda Trijselaar urged the public to celebrate safely and respect emergency responders during what will be the final year consumers are allowed to set off fireworks.
Trijselaar emphasized that firefighters are prepared to prevent and respond to incidents throughout the holiday. She also voiced concern over the recurring problem of aggression and violence toward emergency personnel, noting that responders are often pelted with fireworks during the celebrations.
“This year’s New Year’s Eve is special because it is the last time consumers can set off fireworks,” Trijselaar said. “For many people, this is a tradition they will miss, and that should be acknowledged. At the same time, the fireworks ban starting in 2026 is an important step toward a safer society, with fewer injuries, less damage, and less aggression toward our emergency responders.”
Trijselaar called on the public to enjoy the tradition responsibly. “Let’s do this right together. Celebrate, enjoy the tradition, but do it safely and with respect for each other and our emergency workers.”
