Two killed in car accident on N242 in Zuid-Scharwoude
Two people lost their lives on Friday morning after an accident on the N242 in Zuid-Scharwoude. For reasons still unknown, a car left the road and landed in the water alongside it at around 10:45 a.m.
Firefighters, including dive teams, were on the scene with multiple vehicles to extract the victims from the car and the water. A trauma helicopter was also called in.
The N242 is fully closed in both directions between Alkmaar and Heerhugowaard/Zuid-Scharwoude following the accident, to facilitate vehicle recovery and the police investigation. Drivers in Noord-Holland are advised to anticipate major delays near the N242 as the police continue their investigation.
Traffic Forensic Investigation units are examining the circumstances of the accident. At this stage, there is no evidence suggesting that any other vehicles were involved.
The identities of the two deceased victims have not yet been officially released by the police, as the families must be notified first.
The N242 road marks the boundary between Heerhugowaard’s industrial zone and the Langedijk countryside. Alongside it runs a deep ditch, which in some stretches lacks a guardrail. There have been reports of slippery roads in the country with, the N31 between Harlingen near the Afsluitdijk being closed due to the ice on the road.
