Senior party leaders allegedly knew of false details in lawmaker’s asylum application
A new NTR documentary revealed that senior political figures were aware for years that Somali-born lawmaker Ayaan Hirsi Ali provided false personal information, including a name and date of birth, in her asylum application—information unknown at the time to former Dutch Prime Minister Jan Peter Balkenende and former Minister for Immigration and Integration Rita Verdonk.
Hirsi Ali, a former member of the Tweede Kamer for the VVD, had previously acknowledged these inaccuracies in media interviews. The issue escalated in 2006 after the investigative program Zembla publicly confronted her, turning the case into a major political controversy.
The documentary “De storm van Balkenende,” states that then–VVD party chairman Bas Eenhoorn and party leader Gerrit Zalm had long known about the false details. Balkenende and Verdonk said they were never directly informed by the VVD leadership.
After the Zembla broadcast, Verdonk, as the responsible minister at the time, had to decide whether Hirsi Ali could retain her Dutch citizenship. According to the documentary, Eenhoorn reassured Hirsi Ali: “As far as I’m concerned, everything is going fine. You just shouldn’t move, take it easy, just keep going.” Both Balkenende and Verdonk expressed surprise when shown that footage.
At a press conference on the matter, Balkenende said: “When untruth is spoken, there is, of course, no remedy against it.” In the documentary, he reflects on the statement, calling it “too harsh.”
