Joran van der Sloot was found severely injured in his cell in the Peruvian prison where the Dutchman is serving his sentence for murder, extortion, and drug trafficking. According to the local newspaper La República, Van der Sloot attempted suicide.
The Peruvian Ministry of Justice said that prison guards found Van der Sloot injured in his cell while serving breakfast to the inmates. Prison staff immediately provided assistance. The Dutchman is in a stable condition, but remains under medical supervision, the Ministry said.
Van der Sloot is in Challapalca prison serving a 28-year sentence for the murder of 21-year-old Stephany Flores in 2010. In October 2023, he was also sentenced to 20 years in prison for extorting the mother of American teenager Natalee Holloway. According to the woman, Van der Sloot confessed to killing her daughter on Aruba in 2005 and said he would tell her where to find Natalee’s body if she paid him money. Earlier in 2023, he was sentenced to another 18 years for drug smuggling.
Earlier this year, it was reported that Peru wanted to transfer Van der Sloot to the notorious CECOT prison in El Salvador. The Dutchman was among a group of “difficult inmates” that Peru wanted to send to CECOT, where tens of thousands of people are detained up to 80 to a cell.
