Site that let Dutch bet on parliamentary elections also taking bets on world conflicts

Polymarket, the illegal gambling website that let thousands of Dutch gamble on the outcome of the parliamentary elections, is also taking bets on world conflicts, RTL Nieuws discovered.

Gamblers are placing bets on whether Israel will launch another attack on Gaza today, or whether Russia will succeed in capturing the Ukrainian city of Pokrovsk before the end of the year.

The American website Polymarket is illegal in the Netherlands. The site does not have a license from the Dutch Gambling Authority, which is required to operate an online gambling site in the Netherlands. And betting on politics or news events is also prohibited in the Netherlands. Despite this, the website is still accessible.

In Belgium, Polymarket is on a blacklist and blocked by internet providers. But such a list doesn’t exist in the Netherlands.

Polymarkets calls itself a prediction market, an online platform that doesn’t have a gambling license, but allows users to bet on the outcome of future events, like the parliamentary elections in October.

The Netherlands’ Gambling Authority is currently investigating prediction markets like Polymarket.
