PostNL braces for 3 million daily packages during Black Friday, Sinterklaas rush
PostNL is bracing for an unprecedented surge in package deliveries as Black Friday and Sinterklaas approach, expecting to handle more than three million parcels daily during the peak period, nearly triple its usual volume of 1.2 million, Emerce reported on Thursday.
The overlapping holiday schedule this year compresses the usual interval between Black Friday and Sinterklaas into a single weekend, creating a logistical challenge the company has been preparing for over the past ten months. PostNL has deployed 1,000 extra delivery drivers and 1,250 trucks to manage the increased workload and has added Sunday, November 30, as an additional delivery day.
In the Nieuwegein sorting center, the impact is already evident. Normally handling 40,000 parcels a day, the facility now processes at least 60,000. Sorter and driver Ronald Le Blanc described the intensity to RTV Utrecht: "I do my utmost to deliver everything on time, but it’s not always possible when there’s such a torrent of packages. Sometimes someone snaps, but fortunately most people are understanding."
PostNL is also adjusting to changing consumer habits. Use of parcel lockers has doubled over the past year, although the company is still assessing how much they will ease pressure during this holiday season.
The Black Friday delivery spike is expected to extend across the holiday period, and PostNL has requested that retailers stagger sales to help distribute orders more evenly over the peak days.
