Dutch regulators shut down online pharmacies over patient safety risks

Dutch regulators have banned two online pharmacies from supplying medications after finding major safety lapses. On Thursday, the Health and Youth Care Inspectorate prohibited a Dinxperlo pharmacy from serving Dutch patients. According to De Gelderlander, a similar ban was issued this summer against a Venlo pharmacy.

Both pharmacies failed to verify whether patients could safely take medications, lacking access to their records and other prescriptions. The Venlo pharmacy immediately stopped deliveries, while Dinxperlo is reportedly taking steps to resume safe service.

The inspectorate regularly inspects licensed online pharmacies, many of which fail to comply with regulations. It also warns against illegal sites selling prescription-only medicines or offering prescriptions through online doctor consultations, which carry risks.

“Incorrect dosages can be dangerous, sometimes life-threatening,” the inspectorate said. Online purchases may also be contaminated or fraudulent, with patients receiving fake or no medication at all.
