Firefighters break into apartment after sleeping woman fails to notice smoke
Firefighters in Apeldoorn forced their way into an apartment early Sunday morning after smoke filled the unit while the resident remained asleep, Omroep Gelderland reported.
Around 4:30 a.m., a smoke detector went off in the apartment complex on Hobbemalaan. Several neighbors noticed a strong smell of smoke and immediately called emergency services. Police and fire crews arrived at the scene within minutes.
The smoke originated from one of the apartments, but the resident, a woman, did not respond. Firefighters used a battering ram to break down the door. When the firefighters began forcing the door, the woman woke up. The apartment was filled with thick smoke, and investigators found food burning on the stove in the kitchen.
Fire crews did not need to extinguish a fire but ventilated the apartment to clear the smoke. Ambulance personnel examined the woman for smoke inhalation and treated her on-site. She was not transported to a hospital.
Authorities noted that the incident highlights the critical importance of working smoke detectors. Quick action by alert neighbors helped prevent a potentially serious situation.
