Record mobile data use in the Netherlands surges 16% in Q2; Driven by 5G at home

Mobile data usage in the Netherlands hit a new high in the second quarter, surpassing the previous record set just three months earlier. According to the Telecommonitor from the Authority for Consumers and Markets (ACM), this represented an increase of over 16 percent. The regulator did not investigate the cause but suggested it could be partly due to Odido’s Klik&Klaar internet service.

With this product, the provider’s customers have been able to use 5G internet at home for about a year, without needing a cable. As a result, that usage counts toward mobile data rather than fixed-line internet.

Mobile data usage in the second quarter reached 719 million gigabytes. The last time there was a larger percentage increase was in the second quarter of 2023, when it rose by more than 20 percent. In the first quarter of this year, usage grew by 7 percent, reaching a new record of 619 million gigabytes.

There has also been a notable increase in the number of users of independent mobile providers, which do not have their own network infrastructure. Examples include 50+, Lyca, and Lebara. With the number of SIM cards rising from 4.9 million to 5.4 million, their market share increased from 15 to 20 percent in the first quarter to between 20 and 25 percent in the second quarter.

ACM also reported that the number of households with a fiber-optic subscription increased by 2.8 percent in the second quarter of 2025.
