Second suspect arrested after body is found in cornfield near Belgian border
A second suspect has been arrested in connection with the death of 41-year-old Sherwin Peterhof from Suriname, the AD has reported. Peterhof’s body was discovered on August 15 in a cornfield in Hazeldonk, near the Belgian border. Prior to his death, he had lived in Amsterdam and Almere.
The police are not providing further details about this arrest “in the interest of the investigation.” It follows the arrest of a 40-year-old woman from Amsterdam at Schiphol on Sunday, August 31, also suspected of involvement in Sherwin’s death.
Sherwin’s body was found when an observant farmer in Hoogstraten, just under seven kilometers from Hazeldonk in Noord-Brabant, noticed something suspicious at the edge of a cornfield. While digging, he uncovered the lifeless body about a meter underground, according to RTL.
Police report that Sherwin was last seen alive on August 5 in Amsterdam, and a friend reported him missing on August 12. Investigators found that he had been in contact with several people in Amsterdam and Almere shortly before his disappearance and may have visited a residence on Bijlmerplein in Amsterdam. It remains unclear how he entered the apartment or how he ended up in Belgium.
Authorities suspect the crime may have occurred at the apartment and are urging local residents and anyone who was nearby at the time to provide information.
In addition, police are looking for a man who spoke with Sherwin on August 5 at Hilversum station. Camera footage shows them saying goodbye warmly. Sherwin then passed through the gates, but authorities have not been able to trace the man through public transport records. They believe he may have important information.
The police are also seeking the clothing, jewelry, and backpack Sherwin wore when he went missing, including a gold chain with a large pendant and multiple gold rings. Anyone who noticed anything near the cornfield where he was buried is urged to come forward.
