This year could become the sunniest on record in the Netherlands

2025 is in the running to become one of the sunniest years in the Netherlands' records. So far this year, the country has had 1,817 hours of sunshine. Typically, the sun shines an average of 1,816 hours across the country in an entire year, Weeronline reported.

If the rest of 2025 gets the typical amount of sunshine, based on the climate period 1995-2024, the year will reach over 2,100 hours. That would put it in second place for the sunniest year since records started at the start of the last century.

2022 currently holds the record with an impressive 2,233 hours of sunshine. 2003 is in second place with 2,100 hours, followed by 2018 and 2020 with 2,000 hours per year.

This year, only January was gloomier than usual. The sun didn’t break through the clouds at all from January 1 to 5, and the period from January 15 to 24 was often gray and gloomy.

All the other months were sunny or sunnier than usual. March even broke the sunshine record for the month, and April went down as the fourth sunniest April in history. May and June also made the top 10.

Today will also be predominantly sunny in the Netherlands, though a few clouds may get in its way here and there. The day will be summery warm, with maximums reaching 28 degrees in the south. Saturday will be another warm day, though with more clouds and a chance of showers. After that, the weather will vary more between sunshine and showers, with cooler temperatures.
