Man arrested for blocking Utrecht Mayor Dijksma from entering council meeting

A 36-year-old man from Nieuwegein was arrested last week on suspicion of preventing Utrecht Mayor Sharon Dijksma from entering a city council meeting in July, police reported Monday.

The incident occurred on July 17, when pro-Palestinian demonstrators disrupted the council session, which was subsequently suspended. According to AD, after a discussion with protesters, Dijksma attempted to re-enter the chamber, but was blocked at the door. “There was a scuffle at the door, and I was right in the middle of it,” Dijksma said at the time.

Authorities say the person is suspected of using force or threats to obstruct the mayor from resuming the council session. He has been released following questioning and is scheduled to appear in court at a later date. Police said additional arrests are not ruled out.

The Utrecht municipality subsequently filed a report against “a handful” of individuals involved in the use of violence during the disruption.

The protest followed the rejection of a motion calling for a boycott of Israeli products and institutions. After the motion was defeated, some attendees disrupted the council meeting. Dijksma spoke with the demonstrators, but tensions escalated. Her spokesperson described the situation as “intense and intimidating.”
