Several Utrecht cops hurt in clashes with football supporters; 2 arrested

Several police officers got hurt on Sunday evening during disturbances after the FC Utrecht match against Go Ahead Eagles in Galgenwaard. The police made two arrests.

According to the police, one cop was taken to a hospital with injuries. Several other police officers suffered minor injuries. Ambulance personnel treated them at the scene.

Supporters of the Utrecht club sought confrontation with the police after the match, which Go Ahead Eagles had won. Angry supporters threw stones, bicycles, and manhole covers at the police. Utrecht mayor Sharon Dijksma had implemented an emergency order, and the riot police carried out multiple charges.

The police are investigating to identify other supporters who committed violence so that they can be prosecuted. “The priority of our efforts tonight was to restore public order around the stadium in Utrecht as quickly as possible,” the police said on X.

Sunday was “a low point in terms of football violence,” Mayor Dijksma said. “I would like to express my appreciation for the professional actions of the police and FC Utrecht’s security. The fact that this last match, in particular, went wrong is a blemish on a successful season for the club. Disappointment with sporting performance must never be an excuse for misbehaving like this.”
