Woman, 72, found dead in canal near Tynaarlo; 80-year-old man arrested
The body of a 72-year-old woman from Assen was found in a canal in Tynarloo on Monday afternoon. She had been killed in a crime, the police said. They arrested an 80-year-old man from Assen for involvement in her death.
The woman had been reported missing. While the police were investigating her disappearance in Assen, investigators received a report that someone had been found dead in the Noord-Willemskanaal near Tynaarlo. It turned out to be the 72-year-old woman.
The woman’s death was not accidental, the police concluded after initial investigation. “Traces were found at a home on Thorbeckelaan in Assen and are being investigated further,” the police said.
The police did not say whether the suspect and victim knew each other and revealed no details aobut how the woman died. The suspect is in restricted custody, which means that he is only allowed contact with his lawyer and investigators.
Locals told RTV Drenthe that the victim and the suspect were a couple who lived on Thorbeckelaan. The woman wanted to leave the man, but he had taken her ID cards and passport to prevent it, the locals said.
