The Netherlands records the first “exceptionally early” ground frost of the season
For the first time since midsummer, localized ground frost occurred in the Netherlands overnight Saturday into Sunday, weeronline reported.
Temperatures dropped below freezing at measurement points in Eindhoven and Volkel, registering -0.3 and -0.2 degrees at 10 centimeters above the ground. At the standard observation height of 1.5 meters, temperatures remained above freezing.
Meteorologists described the frost as “exceptionally early” for August. Typically, the first ground frost is measured in late September, with last year’s occurrence recorded on September 13. According to Weerplaza, “Various conditions aligned perfectly overnight. There was hardly any wind and minimal differences in air pressure, allowing cold air to flow down from above, which caused significant cooling.”
The record for the earliest post-summer frost was set on August 22, 1973, when temperatures in Twente dropped to -2.2 degrees. Since systematic measurements began, ground frost has never occurred this early in the midsummer period, defined as July 20 through August 21. Other unusually early instances were in 1993 and August 29 in Soesterberg, when temperatures fell to -0.4 degrees.
Following this morning’s frost, daytime temperatures are expected to rise to between 19 and 21 degrees, with mostly dry conditions and a mix of sun and clouds. The northeastern regions may see a brief shower early in the day.
Temperatures will continue climbing over the coming days, reaching 22 to 25 degrees on Monday. On Tuesday, much of the country will reportedly experience summer-like warmth, with highs of 25 to 28 degrees and increasing chances of showers in the afternoon and evening.
By Wednesday, temperatures in the east are expected to reach 25 degrees, and elsewhere 22 to 24 degrees, with intermittent cloud cover and occasional showers.
From Thursday onward, a southwesterly flow over the sea will bring more variable weather, including regular rain bands and stronger winds. Temperatures are forecast to gradually decrease to around 20 degrees by the following weekend.
