Confetti cannon explodes at Boerenrock festival, injuring woman in packed crowd
A confetti cannon exploded during a performance by StukTV at the Boerenrock Festival in Drouwenermond on Saturday night, injuring at least one person as fragments shot into the crowd.
The incident happened around 10:50 p.m. during a countdown moment in the show, when the cannon — a device the group uses regularly during performances — malfunctioned. The barrel burst, sending pieces of PVC flying toward the audience, RTV Utrecht reported.
According to witnesses, a young woman was struck in the leg by debris. Security quickly placed barriers around the area to keep other festivalgoers at a distance.
Festival organizers said they were shaken by the accident. “We have immediately arranged medical assistance for the victim,” one organizer stated. They said her injuries were relatively minor. “She had a swollen knee and was taken by taxi to the emergency department. We have and will keep in contact with the victim.”
The cannon had been positioned on the side of the stage area, where both StukTV’s crew and audience members nearby were visibly shocked, according to RTV Utrecht's reporting. Many others, further back in the crowd, only saw the confetti drifting down and were reportedly unaware of the explosion. The performance continued after the accident.
