Dutch temperature record for August 14 broken with 33.6°C in Volkel
Temperatures reached 33.6 degrees Celsius in Volkel at 3:10 p.m., making it the warmest August 14 in the Netherlands since weather measurements began, the weather service Weeronline reported. This broke the record set in 2022, when temperatures reached 33.4 degrees Celsius in Gilze-Rijen on this date.
No official date-specific heat record has been recorded at the KNMI’s main weather station in De Bilt so far, Weeronline reported. The previous hottest temperature on August 14 at that location was also in 2022, when the mercury reached 32.2 degrees Celsius.
The warm weather on recent days will steadily ease in the coming days, the weather service reported. On Friday, temperatures in the south and southeast could still reach 30 or 31 degrees Celsius, on Saturday between 22 and 27 degrees, and on Sunday, the maximum will be around 25 degrees.
This also showed in the decision made by the provinces of Noord-Holland, Flevoland, Friesland, Groningen, and Drenthe, where the National Heat Plan will no longer be in effect from 6:00 p.m. on Thursday.
The code yellow warning will also no longer apply from Thursday evening. It will remain warm in other provinces. According to the KNMI, the code yellow will remain in effect in those areas on Friday.
The code yellow warning was issued on Tuesday for the whole of the Netherlands. The Dutch National Institute for Public Health and the Environment (RIVM) uses the announcement of the National Heat Plan to inform organizations and healthcare providers about the high temperatures. They can then, for example, provide extra support to the elderly.
