Video: Renesse campsite evacuated over very large fire in restaurant

A campsite in Renesse was evacuated during the early hours of Thursday morning due to a “very large fire” in the onsite restaurant, reported Zeeland Veilig, the local office for the emergency services. The fire is under control, and the fire brigade is checking whether the first campers can return to their tents or caravans.

The fire started at around 4:30 a.m. in the kitchen of the restaurant on Korte Moermondsweg. The restaurant is located on the Zonnedorp campsite, with room for 950 guests. Smoke from the fire also caused issues at the adjacent campsite, Camping International, with space for 800 to 1,000 guests.

“There is a lot of smoke,” Zeeland Veilig reported early on Thursday morning. “Campers whose tents or caravans are surrounded by smoke are being awakened by us and the police and taken to a safe location.” Evacuated campers were offered shelter at a neighboring campsite and a nearby garden center.

At 6:40 a.m., Zeeland Veilig reported that the fire was under control. Forty minutes later, the safety office said that firefighters were inspecting the campsites and taking measurements for harmful substances. “When the situation is safe, the first guests can return to their tents or caravans. Breakfast has been arranged for campers at the reception location.”

The restaurant had solar panels on its roof, and the campsites are littered with soot particles and other debris. Zeeland Veilig urged campers to wear gloves before picking up any debris and to dispose of the material in the waste container or a garbage bag for residual waste. Soot on cars, bicycles, and other items can be cleaned with warm water and soap.
