Union condemns murder of journalists in Gaza; Dutch Jews express war fatigue
Frustration is reportedly mounting among the Dutch Jewish community as the Gaza conflict drags on, with many expressing deep concern over the violence and its repercussions both abroad and at home, NOS reports.
In the meantime, the Dutch Association of Journalists (Nederlandse Vereniging van Journalisten, NVJ) expressed shock over the killing of four Al Jazeera staff members during an attack on a press tent near a hospital in Gaza. The news broadcaster alleges the attack was a targeted Israeli strike.
“This is the latest attack since the war began,” NVJ General Secretary Thomas Bruning said. “At first, it seemed journalists killed were in the wrong place at the wrong time. But now the situation is such that Israel openly admits it is pursuing journalists doing their work. That is disgraceful.” According to the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ), 186 media workers covering Gaza have died so far.
Bruning emphasized the critical role of journalists still working in the conflict zone, as international media face near-total access restrictions. “The situation is dramatic for human lives and for the wider public. Voices from the conflict area are being silenced,” he said.
The NVJ renewed its call for political action to protect journalists in Gaza. “This cannot go unanswered,” Bruning said. In June, 45 national and regional Dutch media organizations petitioned outgoing Foreign Minister Caspar Veldkamp to intervene for journalist safety in the Palestinian territories.nd dismantled.” She also highlighted the threats faced by Jewish institutions in the Netherlands.
Meanwhile, the Dutch Jewish community is expressing growing fatigue and concern over the Gaza conflict, with some members reportedly distancing themselves from the Israeli government’s actions.
Naomi Mestrum, director of the Center for Information and Documentation on Israel (CIDI), and Hadassah, a Jewish student and writer, told NOS they have seen a sharp rise in violence and intimidation against Jews in the Netherlands, with Jewish events now routinely secured. “That escalation is felt throughout the community,” Mestrum said.
Hadassah stressed the diversity within the Dutch Jewish community, urging that Jewish individuals be separated from the policies of the Israeli government. “Everyone wants this war to end,” she told NOS.
Mestrum also expressed doubt about Israel’s approach to freeing hostages held by Hamas, noting that recent failed negotiations have left many feeling hopeless.
Chantal Runne, founder of Jewish-Muslim cooperation initiatives, condemned Israel’s approval of the Gaza City occupation as causing “unnecessary suffering and death,” while emphasizing that Hamas “must also be stopped as well.”
