Market with shops, street food, fresh produce to open in Amsterdam city hall end 2025
A central market hall will open in the Amsterdam City Hall on Waterlooplein at the end of this year. It will be called Amstel 1 and have space for 25 shops, food stalls, and restaurants. Plans for the market date back to 2015 and were thought up by the late mayor Eberhard van der Laan.
Most of the spaces are already occupied, but initiators Markus Konings, Jeroen van de Kraats, Yourick Fokker, and Igor Sancisi are still looking for several local entrepreneurs, brands, and creators who “want to add color and flavor to the concept,” Parool reports.
There is still space for a café, a restaurant, and artisan shops. The plan is to sell vegetables and street food from primarily local, organic, and sustainable businesses. But the initiators are open to other ideas.
“We want to give new ideas a chance here. As initiators, we are building the framework for Amstel 1 - the development comes from the city and all the wonderful businesses that can be found here. Amstel 1 is a platform for everything happening in the city,” said initiator Sancisi.
Amstel 1 was inspired by well-known food and retail markets like Markthalle Neun in Berlin and LX Factory in Lisbon, “but done in an Amsterdam way.”
The idea for the central market hall originated with the later mayor Eberhard van der Laan in 2015. He proposed giving the ground floor of the city hall, known as the Stopera, back to Amsterdammers.
