Storms leave flooded streets, fallen trees in northern Netherlands; More storms today

Thunderstorms left flooded streets and toppled trees in their wake, especially in the northern Netherlands on Sunday. More storms are expected to hit the country this afternoon, again bringing heavy downpours and strong winds.

In the Groningen community of Roodeschool, 46 millimeters of rain fell in a short period on Sunday, RTL Nieuws reported. Assen got almost 40 mm. Both municipalities experienced localized street flooding. Several households in Drenthe, Friesland, and Groningen also experienced flooding.

Other parts of the country got less rain, but were subject to strong winds with gusts of up to 75 kilometers per hour. In Maastricht, a gust of 79 km/h was recorded, and 75 km/h was measured in Nieuw-Beerta, Groningen. The strong winds blew down several trees.

After a relatively sunny morning, more thunderstorms are expected in the Netherlands this afternoon, according to the KNMI. β€œAt times, there will be heavy showers with a chance of hail and gusts of up to 50-60 km/h,” the meteorological institute said.

Between the showers, there will be occasional sunshine. Maximums will climb to around 23 degrees. Tonight will be very cloudy, with a few showers and thunderstorms. No weather warning is in place.
