Gambling authority to take action against news outlets advertising illegal gambling
The Dutch gambling authority (Ksa) is going to take action against (online) magazines and news outlets that promote illegal gambling. Previously, the regulator only gave the media outlets information or advice to prevent this from happening in the future. Now the Ksa has said they will take measures if needed, like issuing a fine.
The Ksa reports that it still receives many complaints about articles that entice people to play at casinos that are not connected to the Cruks exclusion system. That is a register where people can sign up to take a “gambling stop.” The stop applies to gambling sites, arcades, and casinos with a Dutch license and lasts at least six months.
Commercials that are actively geared towards these vulnerable people are extra damaging, the Ksa emphasized. This is why the regulator is planning on taking a more active stance against these commercials. In addition, the Ksa is also investigating marketing agencies that offer these types of deals to the media in exchange for payment.
Two years ago, the ban on untargeted advertising for online gambling came into effect. Gambling providers are no longer allowed to advertise in newspapers, magazines, or to reach minors, young adults, and other vulnerable groups. However, they are still allowed to advertise targeted ads, for example, via social media.
