Dutch gambling regulator expects rise in betting during World Cup
The Dutch Gambling Authority (Ksa) expects a rise in sports betting during the upcoming World Cup, with gambling operators likely increasing advertising in response. While this is not necessarily seen as problematic, a spokesperson warned that the tournament strongly attracts young adults, who are more susceptible to gambling addiction. The regulator is launching a campaign aimed at highlighting the risks for this group.
The KSA is also stepping up oversight of gambling operators, particularly regarding advertising rules. Advertisements must not be aimed at young adults and are not permitted to include role models. The regulator can enforce these rules by issuing warnings or imposing fines.
Sports betting typically rises during major football tournaments such as the Euros and the World Cup. This year’s World Cup in the United States, Canada, and Mexico kicks off on Thursday evening.
According to the regulator, predicting match results through a World Cup pool is not dangerous. “How addictive a game of chance is depends in part on the time between placing bets and receiving payouts. In that context, World Cup pools are not considered high-risk, because they are filled in advance and the final outcome is only known after the World Cup,” the Ksa said in response to questions.
