Dutch listed companies reevaluating diversity policy over U.S. stance

Several publicly listed Dutch companies are evaluating their diversity policies. These companies are also active in the United States, where new regulations have been in effect since this year, reported Eumedion, which represents the interests of institutional investors.

The new U.S. regulations pertain to corporate targets related to diversity, equality, and inclusion (DEI). President Donald Trump has been highly critical of these DEI targets, which he previously called discriminatory against white people and men.

Several Dutch companies have already adjusted certain targets, Eumedion noted. The advocacy group understands that these companies face limitations in the area of DEI, but emphasizes “the importance of equal opportunities, an inclusive workplace, and equal pay for equal work.” The advocacy group will therefore “continue to hold companies accountable for their practices in this area.”

Insurer Aegon, for example, has decided to discontinue a target for women in senior management positions. Another example is the consultancy and engineering firm Arcadis, which has adjusted its bonus criteria in the interim. It replaced a gender diversity target with one unrelated to diversity, Eumedion said.

All companies stressed their need to comply with local regulations, but added that they absolutely do not compromise on diversity, equality, and inclusion, according to Eumedion. The listed companies say they consider these topics beneficial for companies and organizations. “Companies continue to prioritize promoting an inclusive environment in which everyone feels valued and respected,” the advocacy group said.

Eumedion also reported that diversity in the top echelons of companies listed in Amsterdam has increased. On July 1 of this year, the boards of AEX companies consisted of an average of 29 percent women, compared to 24 percent a year earlier. The proportion of directors with a different cultural background increased from 7 to 8 percent.
