Max Verstappen finishes in a disappointing fifth place at the British Grand Prix

Max Verstappen finished fifth in the British Grand Prix on Sunday in a disappointing race for the Red Bull driver. Verstappen spun out after an incident involving Oscar Piastri on the 22nd lap. The race was won by home driver Lando Norris for McLaren. Oscar Piastri came second, with Nico Hulkenberg finishing third in his Kick Sauber car to pick up his first podium spot in his 15-year career.

Verstappen started the race in pole position after a fantastic qualifying session on Saturday. And he was able to keep hold of the top spot after the start of the race, despite a decent start from Piastri in second.

The race was marred by several virtual safety cars and yellow flags. Drivers seemed to struggle with the conditions, with a total of five drivers failing to finish the race.

Piastri caught Verstappen on the eighth lap to take the lead in the race just before the rain started to fall on the Silverstone circuit. Piastri quickly built up a significant gap to Verstappen, and the Red Bull driver also lost second place to the other McLaren vehicle when Lando Norris took advantage of an error by Verstappen.

The incident that ruined Verstappen’s race, and also wrecked Piastri’s chances of a win, came in the 22nd lap. Piastri was leading the race behind a safety car. It was almost time to restart the race when the Australian suddenly hit the brakes, which allowed Verstappen to pass him, an action not permitted.

Verstappen then had to stop to let Piastri climb ahead again, and the McLaren driver then sped off to restart the race. Verstappen’s attempt to follow him went poorly as he spun out, pushing him back to 10th place. Piastri was given a 10-second time penalty as a result of the incident.

As has often been the case this season, Verstappen was angry with the limitations of the Red Bull vehicle. “Ah mate, this car is just undrivable. Fuck!” He yelled into the team radio at one point.

He was eventually able to go past Carlos Sainz and Lance Stroll to finish the race in fifth place.

It is another blow to Verstappen’s title hopes. The Dutch driver remains in third place with 165 points. Oscar Piastri is top with 234 points, and Lando Norris is second with 226 points.

The drivers will now have a few weeks off from racing. They will return on July 27 to race at the Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps for the Belgian Grand Prix.
