Massive greenhouse collapse in Middenmeer causes €20 million in damage, no injuries
A vast greenhouse complex measuring approximately nine hectares collapsed on Friday afternoon in Middenmeer, Noord-Holland, causing an estimated 20 million euros in damage, according to Agro Care. No injuries were reported.
Security camera footage captured the moment the structure gave way shortly after 4:30 p.m., according to NOS. “You don’t want to imagine what could have happened if people had still been inside,” an Agro Care spokesperson said.
The greenhouses contained tomato seedlings approximately three weeks old. Bas Eilander, the site director, told NOS that earlier in the day, 65 employees had been working in the facility. Some were sitting elsewhere having a beer when the collapse occurred.
Almost nothing remains of the technical installations. The company stated that the insurance company and building inspectors are investigating the cause.
The greenhouse was built in 2015 and was described as a hypermodern facility with all maintenance up to date. It was undergoing renovation work to install energy-saving screens. “Those may possibly have played a role in this incident,” Agro Care said in a statement.
Another greenhouse next to the collapsed structure remained standing. “But of course, we won’t let anyone work there today,” the spokesperson added. “We called everyone off. We first have to be certain it is safe again.”
