Man arrested in Amsterdam for assaulting, attempting to kill sex workers

The Amsterdam police arrested a man on May 15 for seriously assaulting a sex worker in the Red Light District and another sex worker in the Singel District. The man is suspected of attempted manslaughter and is still in custody, the police reported on Thursday.

The man’s arrest was part of a special three-day action called Team Bert, during which the police in the city center focused on tackling troublemakers and criminals on the street. Officers walked the streets in plainclothes and intervened in any issue they noticed.

The man trying to kill two sex workers was by far the most serious crime caught during the action. The police also arrested 16 drug dealers and three people for carrying knives. Two people were detained who still had to serve prison sentences, and 12 for violating restraining orders imposed by either the mayor or the court.

The police also caught three shoplifters, three muggers, and two pickpockets. And three undocumented people were identified. The police handed two of them over to the Amsterdam department for Aliens, Identification, and Human Trafficking. One is still detained, awaiting deportation.

During the three-day-long action, the police stopped and checked 74 people and opened 87 cases. 81 official reports were filed and 50 restraining orders imposed.
