Video: Submerged car with two bodies inside found in Vinkeveen; Victims unidentified
A car found in a Vinkeveen waterway turned out to have two bodies inside the vehicle, police confirmed on Thursday. Though the vehicle was found that morning, it was not clear when it had plunged into the water.
A passerby noticed the car in the water near Ter Aase Zuwe, a stretch of road running from a cafe to several campgrounds and lodgings in the provincial Utrecht municipality. Police were dispatched to the scene just before 10:50 a.m., and both firefighters and paramedics soon followed. A trauma team was also initially sent by helicopter.
Police stated that they are currently still in the process of identifying the victims, and hope witnesses will come forward to help piece together the mystery, though no descriptions of the vehicle or victims were released. The front end and wheels of the car involved suggest it was either a Skoda Octavia 4 Sportline or vRS model, the latter having a more powerful capable of reaching 100 km/h in under 6.5 seconds.
"But it is still unclear how long the car had been in the water. The cause of the incident is also still unknown," police wrote in a statement.
Specialized investigative teams with expertise in traffic collisions and forensic evidence were called in to help determine what happened. Any witnesses, individuals with camera footage, or anyone with any relevant information should contact authorities, police said.
