Search called off for Dutch tourist missing in mountains in Italy
The Italian authorities have called off the massive search for the missing 31-year-old Dutch tourist in the mountains near Lake Como. After six days, there is little hope that the man is still alive, Mayor Daniele Pozzi of the nearby town of Livo said, AD reports.
The 31-year-old father went missing on Monday, April 28, while holidaying with his wife and child. He went hiking in the mountains near Lake Como by himself and never returned. According to AD, the Amsterdam man, who worked in education, was an experienced hiker and nature lover, and this wasn’t his first visit to the area.
The local authorities launched a massive search frot he man on Tuesday, with over 100 rescue workers and volunteers combing the area while drones and helicopters searched from above. They searched “endless hectares of forest,” dived into lakes, descended into gorges, and even climbed to over 1,800 meters above sea level to see if the Dutch tourist was trapped somewhere, the mayor said. “They have done much more than was possible, with skill that is truly astonishing.”
But the search came to nothing. No sign of the man was found. “Our thoughts now go out mainly to his family,” the mayor said after calling off the search. It may be picked up again if new clues emerge.
